Looking for Erik - or: I followed a Viking
A mild-mannered, careful Londoner, I decided to follow Viking convict and explorer Erik the Red from Norway, across Iceland to the land he colonised - Greenland.
I had little in common with Erik. Not only was I born a thousand years later, but I had an instinct to obey rules and a total lack of outdoor survival skills. I wanted to know what it was like to be so different, so I set out to imagine Erik's life. I travelled by foot, by boat, by bus and by cargo ship; I met archaeologists, farmers and hippies; I peered at ancient manuscripts and poked around Viking ships.
Here you can read about my journey in my report to my funders (there are pictures, I promise). You can look at pictures of the places I visited - maybe plan a Viking holiday yourself. If you're a teacher (or you just like activity sheets) you can find some classroom Viking adventures for KS2.
The book of my journey - all the disasters, all the adventures, and my developing relationship with Erik - is seeking a publisher.
